This Sunday, the Indianapolis Colts (8-6) play host to the New York Giants (5-9) as they continue to ramp up their efforts for an AFC playoff push.
The Colts currently sit in the seventh seed, needing to finish sixth or better to get a spot in the postseason. Standing in their way is perhaps the NFL’s Offensive Rookie of the Year in running back Saquon Barkley and the Giants. While these are two teams heading in different directions — the Giants were eliminated from playoff contention last Sunday — New York is playing much better overall football of late, so the Colts must continue with going 1-0 each week being their sole focus.
The New York Giants and Indianapolis Colts meet Sunday in NFL action at Lucas Oil Stadium.
The New York Giants look to continue playing spoiler after winning four of their last six games. The New York Giants have split their last six road games. Eli Manning is completing 65.9 percent of his passes for 3,689 yards, 18 touchdowns and nine interceptions. Manning has one or less touchdown passes in nine of his last 13 games. Odell Beckham Jr. and Sterling Shepard have combined for 1,744 receiving yards and 10 touchdowns while Saquon Barkley has 82 receptions. The New York Giants ground game is averaging 101.7 yards per contest, and Barkley leads the way with 1,155 yards and nine touchdowns. Defensively, New York is allowing 24.9 points and 365.8 yards per game. Landon Collins leads the New York Giants with 96 tackles, B.J. Hill has five sacks and Alec Ogletree has five interceptions.
The Indianapolis Colts look for a third straight win to stay in the thick of the AFC playoff race. The Indianapolis Colts have won five straight home games. Andrew Luck is completing 67.3 percent of his passes for 3,951 yards, 34 touchdowns and 13 interceptions. Luck has three or more touchdown passes in eight of his last 11 games. T.Y. Hilton and Eric Ebron have combined for 1,733 receiving yards and 18 touchdowns while Chester Rogers has 43 receptions. The Indianapolis Colts ground game is averaging 107.5 yards per contest, and Marlon Mack leads the way with 755 yards and seven touchdowns. Defensively, Indianapolis is allowing 21.4 points and 341.5 yards per game. Darius Leonard leads the Indianapolis Colts with 146 tackles, Denico Autry has nine sacks and Kenny Moore II has two interceptions.
The Giants are 6-0 ATS in their last 6 road games, 1-4-1 ATS in their last 6 games on fieldturf and 4-1-1 ATS in their last 6 games overall. The Colts are 4-1 ATS in their last 5 games in December, 3-1-1 ATS in their last 5 home games and 5-2-1 ATS in their last 8 games overall. The Giants are 1-4 ATS in their last 5 meetings. The under is 5-0 in Colts last 5 games overall. The under is 15-7 in Giants last 22 games on fieldturf.
The New York Giants have played much better football since coming off their bye week, but they’re fresh off a shutout loss to the Tennessee Titans and are expected to be without Odell Beckham yet again. The Indianapolis Colts are coming off their best win of the season, a blowout over the Dallas Cowboys, and they’re outscoring teams by an average of 17.8 points during their five-game home winning streak. The New York Giants have covered five of their last six games when an underdog of at least seven points. The Indianapolis Colts are 7-2-1 ATS in their last 10 games when a favorite of at least seven points. The Giants showed last week how much this offense struggles without Beckham on the field. The Indianapolis Colts seem to getting better each week and it’s the defense that’s making the biggest improvments. I’m not the chalk eating handicapper, but this feels like a good spot to lay a big number.
The New York Giants are just waiting for their season to end. They have played better down the stretch, but are still at 5-9 for the year. Heading into last week, the Giants still had a slim shot at the postseason, but their offense was a complete no-show in a 17-0 home loss to the Titans. The Giants had gone 4-1 in their previous five games and they averaged 31.4 in those games. In fairness, the game last week was played in a monsoon.
The Giants were able to muster just 260 yards of total offense, including 47 yards on the ground. Saquon Barkley did not have a good game as he ran for only 31 yards, after totaling 538 yards in his previous four games. For the year, he has rushed for 1155 yards and nine TDs, while also catching 82 passes for 654 yards and four TDs. Eli Manning hit just 21/44 passes for 229 yards and an INT. He has had a good year so far, hitting 65.9% of his passes for 3689 yards with 18 TDs and nine INTs. Manning and Barkley will have to step up in this one, but it will not be easy as the Colts have been hot on defense. The New York defense allowed the Titans to pile up 215 yards on the ground, but just 86 through the air, si it had jumbled results. The run defense has been horrible all week, but they have to worry more about the pass with the Colts.
The Giants are 20th in the league in total offense (347.4 ypg), 13th in passing (245.7 ypg), 25th in rushing (101.7 ypg) and 20th in scoring, putting up 21.9 ppg. On defense, they come in ranked 21st in yards allowed (365.8 ypg), 14th against the pass (237.4 ypg), 28th against the run (128.4 ypg) and 23rd in points allowed at 24.9 ppg.
I will be siding with the Colts in this one. They have been rolling, especially on defense and the Giants can’t score. Indy also needs this one as they are fighting for a playoff spot. The Colts are in a sandwich spot as they faced Dallas last week and have Tennessee on the road next week, but they have plenty of motivation to keep it going as they have a chance at a playoff berth. I do not expect the Colts to be flat in this one as there is too much at stake.
