The New England Patriots are nearing the end of an unprecedented run. With eight Super Bowl appearances and what looks like it could be the end of an era, the New York Jets have a chance to spoil things for the Patriots.
According to Jason La Canfora (via Rotoworld), the Patriots could have a “mass exodus” of coaches and executives in 2019 with an impending rebuild on the horizon. If that’s the case, this could be the final push for the Patriots to get to another Super Bowl.
The Patriots are still fighting for a first round bye, and they’ve never played in a Super Bowl without the bye. That means the Jets could play spoiler. If the Texans win and the Patriots lose, they will fall to the No. 3 seed.
Two weeks ago, New York had a chance to beat Houston, but Houston was able to comeback and win. History repeated itself against Green Bay.
The last two weeks New York showed they have an ability to score, and New England can give up points at times. Tom Brady will put up points too. For New York, it’s a matter of whether or not they can keep up offensively with New England.
Yeah, he’s not a player, but give him the spotlight because it’s almost certainly the final game of his four-year Jets coaching career. It’s a career that started with so much promise when the Jets went 10-5 in his first 15 games in his first season. Unfortunately it’s been all downhill ever since — 16-35 since then to be exact and three straight seasons of double-digit losses.
There have been no signs of progress; the team’s discipline has often been lacking; and the fan base has totally lost hope. All that is why he’ll soon be gone, barring a shocking late save by Jets CEO Christopher Johnson. The Jets players seem to genuinely like Bowles. They seem to genuinely want him to stick around. And they seem to be playing hard for him over the last few weeks. Maybe they do have one last going-away present for him. But it’s all just too little, too late.
Sam Darnold was brilliant last week, going pass-for-pass with Aaron Rodgers before losing to the Packers in overtime. He has shown so much growth over the last few weeks that it’s a good bet he finishes with a strong game again. But the Patriots, even in a down year, aren’t the Packers. They are a stronger team top to bottom with a much better coach. So while Darnold might be able to generate some offense, there should be no doubt about Tom Brady and the Patriots’ ability to pick apart a defeated Jets defense. They’ve shown little ability to stop anyone over the last few weeks, especially late in games when it matters the most.
The New England Patriots (10-5) can secure the No. 2 seed in the AFC and a first-round bye in the playoffs with a win over the New York Jets (4-11) as double-digit home favorites at sportsbooks. The Patriots have never won the Super Bowl without a bye, something they have earned each of the previous eight seasons.
The Jets are obviously getting a lot of points in this game, and the Buffalo Bills managed to cover the spread late in a 24-12 loss at New England last week, closing as 13.5-point road underdogs. The Patriots simply need to win this game and do not have to worry about margin of victory or anything else.
The Patriots have dominated their division like no other team in the NFL en route to winning 10 consecutive AFC East titles. They have won 13 of their last 15 divisional games straight up, going 10-5 against the spread during that stretch. They have also won 14 straight games at Gillette Stadium overall to go along with an impressive 11-3 ATS mark.
This is another important test for New England’s defense, which must play better in the postseason, and the players will be motivated to hold their opponent to single digits.
New York has only traveled to New England and beaten the Patriots three times since Brady became the starting quarterback. Brady also saves his best for the Jets regardless of how good they are.The Jets have opened up their playbook recently, and have shown a different gear. Also, the New England defense is vulnerable. The game will be much closer than the experts think, but the Patriots will find a way to win as per usual.
