The Carolina Panthers have been mathematically eliminated from playoff contention. Despite so much promise for fans, they turned from a contender for the divisional title to a team imploding after losing seven straight games.
The Saints, however, have secured home-field advantage for the NFC playoffs. Their win at home over the Steelers last Sunday accomplished that. This game has no bearing on the Saints’ post-season other than serving as playing time for reserves.
The first place New Orleans Saints will collide with the Carolina Panthers in an NFC South showdown Sunday afternoon from the Mercedes-Benz Superdome. The Panthers fell 24-10 to the Falcons last week, and the Saints tallied a 31-28 home win over the Steelers in their previous action. The Saints recorded a 12-9 road win against the Panthers earlier this month.
The Carolina Panthers enter their season finale attempting to snap a disastrous seven-game losing streak which has eliminated them from playoff contention. They are coming off a 24-10 road loss to the Falcons. Taylor Heinicke got the start in place of Cam Newton who is out for the season and he struggled, tossing one touchdown against three interceptions. Heinicke injured his elbow and he will not suit up in this one. Kyle Allen will get the start at QB in this one. Allen saw his first NFL action last week and he completed 4 of 4 passes for 38 yards.
Panthers rushing leader Christian McCaffrey has been a bright spot in the Panthers losing streak. The second-year running back rushed for 101 yards last week, and he has accumulated 1080 receiving yards, and he also leads Carolina with 845 receiving yards. DJ Moore has only made a combined nine receptions in his last three games, and he has notched a season total of 707 receiving yards.
The Panthers offense has struggled mightily down the final stretch of the season. They have only scored more than 20 points in one out of their last four games. The Carolina defense conceded 239 passing yards to Matt Ryan last week, and their pass defense is positioned at 21st in the NFL, while their rush defense ranks 10th. The Panthers hold a 1-6 road record, and they are scoring an average of 22.9 points, pegging them 17th in the NFL. They are allowing an average of 24.5 points, placing them 17th overall.
The New Orleans Saints head into their regular-season finale riding a three-game winning streak. They clinched home field advantage throughout the playoffs with a 31-28 home win over the Steelers on Sunday. Drew Brees was sharp, amassing 326 passing yards with one TD. The 18-year veteran QB has only tossed three TD passes in his last four games. Overall, Brees is having a stellar season, collecting 3992 passing yards with a 32:5 TD to INT ratio.
Saints’ rushing leader Alvin Kamara only managed 23 rushing yards last week. The second-year RB has tallied less than 70 rushing yards in four straight games, and he has notched 883 rushing yards to go along with 709 receiving yards on the year. Michael Thomas continues to produce, making 18 receptions in his last two games, and he has accrued a season total of 1376 receiving yards.
New Orleans features a well-balanced offense. Their passing game ranks 11th in the NFL, while their rushing offense stands at 10th. The Saints defense surrendered 364 passing yards against Pittsburgh last week, and their pass defense ranks down at 28th in the NFL. New Orleans features a 6-1 home record on the season, and they are scoring an average of 32.7 points on the season, good for second in the NFL. The Saints are allowing an average of 21.3 points, placing the ninth overall.
I am taking the points with the Panthers in this contest considering this high spread. The Saints will likely be resting numerous key players which includes Drew Brees and Alvin Kamara. The Panthers defense should be able to contain the Saints offense. They limited New Orleans to only 12 points in a 12-9 loss on December 17th. Also, the Saints are only averaging 20.3 points in their last four games overall.
Furthermore, Panthers RB Christian McCaffery should make an impact on this game. McCaffery was able to collect 120 total yards against the Saints earlier this month, and he has recorded a combined 20 catches in his last two games. Also, the Saints will likely be resting key defensive players.
