The Atlanta Falcons will end their 2018 season with a divisional showdown against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sunday. Since dropping five consecutive losses, the Falcons have bounced back with two straight wins over the Arizona Cardinals and Carolina Panthers. They’ll try to win their third consecutive game over a Buccaneers team reeling from losses to the New Orleans Saints, Baltimore Ravens and Dallas Cowboys.
The Falcons went into 2018 with hopes they’d be able to replicate their magical 2016 season, when their offense set records and put the franchise into position to have a shot at winning its first Super Bowl. They had essentially added rookie first-round draft pick Calvin Ridley to a deep receiving corps that still featured Julio Jones and Mohamed Sanu.
The mere idea of Jones and Ridley playing on the field together, along with running backs Devonta Freemen and Tevin Coleman in the offensive backfield, was enough to make any defensive coordinator cry uncle.
But reality didn’t play out as foreseen on paper.
The Falcons have been inconsistent on offense and playing with a banged-up on defense. They have essentially gone from playing in the Super Bowl two seasons ago to a 6-9 team with an outside view of the postseason. They beat up on the struggling Panthers 24-10 last Sunday.
Tampa Bay is another team that has plenty of questions they’ll be forced to answer in the offseason—the most notable being whether they’re prepared to move forward with Winston as the franchise quarterback. The $20.9 million owed to Winston in the fifth-year option of his rookie contract could make him a trade consideration. He hasn’t progressed the way the Buccaneers hoped he would, and the team isn’t any closer to making it back to the playoffs.
The Atlanta Falcons look for a victory to end the season on a three-game winning streak. The Atlanta Falcons have lost five of their last seven road games. Matt Ryan is completing 69.3 percent of his passes for 4,546 yards, 33 touchdowns and six interceptions. Ryan has two or more touchdown passes in seven of his last 10 games. Julio Jones and Calvin Ridley have combined for 2,328 receiving yards and 16 touchdowns while Mohamed Sanu has 59 receptions. The Atlanta Falcons ground game is averaging 90.7 yards per contest, and Tevin Coleman leads the way with 755 yards and three touchdowns. Defensively, Atlanta is allowing 26.1 points and 381.3 yards per game. De’Vondre Campbell leads the Atlanta Falcons with 85 tackles, Grady Jarrett has six sacks and Damontae Kazee has six interceptions.
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers look to end the season on a high note while snapping a three-game losing streak. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have split their last six home games. Jameis Winston is completing 64.7 percent of his passes for 2,647 yards, 15 touchdowns and 13 interceptions. Winston and Ryan Fitzpatrick and have combined for 32 touchdown passes and 25 interceptions this season. Mike Evans and DeSean Jackson have combined for 2,192 receiving yards and 10 touchdowns while Adam Humphries has 71 receptions. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers ground game is averaging 95.4 yards per contest, and Peyton Barber leads the way with 805 yards and five touchdowns. Defensively, Tampa Bay is allowing 28.7 points and 376.3 yards per game. Lavonte David leads the Tampa Bay Buccaneers with 110 tackles, Jason Pierre-Paul has 11.5 sacks and Andrew Adams has three interceptions.
The Falcons are 2-6 ATS vs. a team with a losing record, 2-6 ATS in their last 8 road games and 2-5 ATS in their last 7 games overall. The Buccaneers are 6-1 ATS in their last 7 games in December, 3-1-1 ATS in their last 5 vs. NFC and 4-1-1 ATS in their last 6 games overall. The favorite is 11-4-1 ATS in their last 16 meetings. The under is 5-0 in Buccaneers last 5 games overall. The under is 5-2 in Falcons last 7 games overall.
The Atlanta Falcons haven’t had the best season in the world, but they have won two straight and their last three wins have come by an average of 21.3 points. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers continue to lose tight, frustrating games, and a lot of it has to do with turnovers and shooting themselves in the foot constantly. The Atlanta Falcons have failed to cover six of their last nine games as a favorite of any kind. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are 4-4-2 ATS in their last 10 games as an underdog of any kind. The Atlanta Falcons have won each of the last four meetings against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and six of the last nine meetings. I considered the Bucs and the free points due to them being at home in this meaningless game and winning in Tampa Bay can be tougher than some think. However, the Buccaneers have burned us a lot this year due to sloppy play and the comedy of errors seem like they never stop. I’ll take the Falcons simply due to them being easier to trust.
The Buccaneers are set to play their last game of the season, a home contest against a division rival also playing to finish their season out on a positive note. The Bucs last played the Falcons in Week 6, where the Bucs narrowly lost in Atlanta 34-29. Tampa Bay will be looking to even the season series on Sunday with a win.
Tampa Bay may have to do it without both wide receiver DeSean Jackson and defensive end Carl Nassib, who were both listed as doubtful on Friday’s injury report. Jackson provides a deep threat when on the field that forces defenses to account for him, which creates favorable matchups for any of the Bucs’ other receiving threats. Nassib has been the jelly to defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul’s peanut butter this season, playing opposite him on the defensive line and combining to help collapse pockets and get pressure on quarterbacks all season long.
