Week eight of NFL football continues as the New York Jets travel to TIAA Bank Field to take on the Jacksonville Jaguars on Sunday, Oct. 27 at 1:00 P.M. These two teams have not met since last season when the Jaguars beat the Jets at home by the score of 31-12. This will be the 15th meeting between these two teams.
New York enters this game with a 1-5 record as it lost to New England at home last week on Monday night. The Jets lost by a whopping 33 points and failed to get on the scoreboard as they will look to quickly forget about last week. Now, the Jets have to travel on the road where they have yet to win a game this season. If New York plans on fixing its road woes, its offense will need to play a lot better. However, one has to question just how realistic that is considering the fact that the Jets have scored more than 16 points just one time this season.
Leading the Jets offensively is quarterback Sam Darnold who has been terrible this season. Specifically, he has 599 passing yards along with three passing touchdowns. In addition, he has also been a turnover machine with five interceptions and one fumble in just three games. If the Jets plan on saving their season, Darnold will need to play like the third overall pick that he was expected to be. However, Darnold is questionable for this game after undergoing a small procedure on his toenail earlier this week.
New York’s biggest threat on defense is linebacker C.J. Mosley who has been great so far this season in limited action. In just two games, he has 17 tackles and one interception. In addition, he also has a defensive touchdown. However, he has battled several injuries this season and is out for this game with a groin injury. With him out of the lineup once again, expect New York’s defense to keep struggling.
Doug Marrone has the Jaguars in okay form headed into this game. Specifically, the Jaguars have three wins through seven games and they are tied for the worst record in the AFC South with the Titans. However, Jacksonville does enter this game on a high note after beating Cincinnati on the road last week by ten points. Now, the Jaguars get to return home to face one of the worst teams in the league who are coming off of a short week as they will look to get back to a .500 record. If Jacksonville is unable to come out of this game with another victory, its hopes of a division title are virtually over. Whether or not the Jaguars can handle this type of pressure, though, remains to be seen.
Leading the Jaguars offensively is rookie quarterbackGardner Minshew II who has been solid this season. Specifically, he has 1,697 passing yards along with ten passing touchdowns. In addition, he has also been very careful with the football as he only has two interceptions. Now, he will get to face another below average defense at home so he will look to put together another quality performance in this game as he hopes to lead his team to another victory.
Starting quarterback Nick Foles (broken clavicle) has returned to practice this week, but likely is a few weeks away from returning. Most likely, he’ll be activated off the IR after the bye week, which would have him face the AFC South rival Indianapolis Colts in Week 11.
Jacksonville’s biggest threat on defense is safety Ronnie Harrison who has been great so far this season. Specifically, he has a team-high two interceptions along with 25 solo tackles. In addition, he also has one sack and one fumble recovery. However, his role has gotten a bit more difficult moving forward now that star cornerback Jalen Ramsey is no longer with the team. In his first game without Ramsey on the roster, Harrison rose to the occasion and recorded an interception. Now, he will look to continue playing well on Sunday.
